Installing Your Software

The installation process is handled by a setup program that starts automatically when you first insert the CD-ROM. You will be warned to close other programs during the installation. Icons for these items can be seen in the task bar. Be sure to temporarily close anti-virus monitoring software û it plays havoc with the installation of any new software. You can also press ctrl+alt+del on your keyboard to see the list of running programsùyou can leave Systray and Explorer running. [ctrl+alt+del means to depress these three keys at the same time û you do not depress the + sign].

This software needs about 60 MB on your hard drive. If you choose during installation to copy the media to a hard drive, you will need 650 MB extra. (This is a little over Gig û and new computers typically have 40-80 Gig hard drives û so you probably have room). If you decide some time later after installation to copy the media, you will need to notify the software about the new path (see Troubleshooting).

This software also installs files in your system folder, such as operating files and screensaver files.

During later operation of the product, various files are written to your TEMP folder, such as .wav files from Spectrogram usage, .tmp files, and a TBS folder for media caching. You should clean out your TEMP folder periodically.

Installing version 3.9 when version 3.5 is already installed

You should not uninstall version 3.5 if you have custom lists or quizzes that you created in an older version of the program. During the installation of version 3.9, all your custom lists and quizzes will automatically be transferred from version 3.5.

Following the successful installation of version 3.9, please check to make sure your custom lists and quizzes are present. If everything looks OK, you may then use the Control Panel to uninstall version 3.5.

Uninstall/Reinstall

You can use the Windows Control Panel Add/Remove to uninstall the program. Look for it under Thayer Birding Software. You might want to do a backup of your sightings and custom lists if you intend to reinstall the software.

An uninstall does not remove the Thayer folder if you have any files in the sub folders that were not installed by the setup program. Examples include backup files you created or the media folder if you copied it to a hard drive.
